A musculoskeletal android with 200+ degrees of freedom and 1,000+ artificial muscles

Protoclone

Summary

Protoclone is Clone Robotics' flagship musculoskeletal humanoid prototype, publicly demonstrated in January 2025, featuring over 200 degrees of freedom driven by more than 1,000 artificial Myofiber muscles.

Protoclone is built around a polymer skeleton modelled on the human body, with 206 bones and more than 500 sensors distributed throughout its frame. Its 1,000+ Myofiber artificial muscles currently operate via a pneumatic system running a 500 W pump, with a transition to hydraulic actuation planned for future generations. An innovative water-based 'sweating' mechanism provides thermal management for the actuators. The robot is designed to tackle household tasks such as cooking and cleaning, and Clone Robotics plans a limited production run of 279 units of its follow-on Clone Alpha platform. Height, weight, and pricing have not been disclosed.
