Sanctuary AI

Vancouver firm building the Phoenix humanoid around highly dexterous, haptic hands.

Sanctuary AI, founded in 2018, develops the Phoenix humanoid with a focus on dexterous manipulation and its Carbon control system. The latest generations — Gen 7 in April 2024 and Gen 8 in late 2024 — push fine-grained hand control as the company's core differentiator.

Phoenix stands 170 cm and weighs 70 kg, with 20-DOF haptic hands that detect forces as low as around 5 mN and a 25 kg payload. Gen 8 moved to a wheeled base after the company judged bipedal legs too fragile for its heavy precision torso. The Carbon control system blends symbolic reasoning, LLMs and reinforcement learning, and Sanctuary claims it can learn new tasks in under 24 hours. Partners include Magna International and Microsoft; the company has raised over C$100 million, including a C$30 million Canadian Strategic Innovation Fund contribution.
