ETH Zurich

Creator of ANYmal and a global leader in legged and humanoid robotics

ETH Zurich's Robotic Systems Lab, led by Marco Hutter, created the ANYmal quadruped robot and is a key partner in humanoid foundation-model research, making it Europe's most influential legged-robotics lab.

ETH Zurich's Robotic Systems Lab (RSL) has pioneered learning-based locomotion control for legged robots, developing the ANYmal quadruped platform and a succession of reinforcement-learning controllers that have set world benchmarks for robust, adaptive walking. RSL's methods — including terrain-adaptive locomotion and whole-body planning — translate directly to the challenges faced by bipedal and humanoid robots. The lab is a recognized partner in humanoid foundation-model reference programs, connecting its hardware and control expertise to the broader robot-learning agenda. ANYbotics, a spin-off from RSL, demonstrates how ETH's research converts into industrial products, a model increasingly relevant to the humanoid sector.
