AIST
Japan's national institute and creator of the long-running HRP humanoid series
Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is the creator of the HRP humanoid series, one of the world's longest-running and most influential humanoid robot research programs.
AIST launched the HRP (Humanoid Robotics Project) series in partnership with industry, producing a succession of full-size humanoid platforms that have served as reference systems for whole-body motion, bimanual manipulation, and human-environment interaction research for decades. The HRP robots have been used extensively in disaster-response research, particularly following the Fukushima disaster, which drove a surge of investment in capable humanoid platforms. AIST's work on humanoid motion planning, task planning, and physical interaction has generated a body of foundational research that continues to inform global humanoid development. As Japan's largest public research organization, AIST bridges fundamental science and the practical needs of Japanese industry in robotics.
