KAIST

Creator of HUBO and part of the lineage behind Rainbow Robotics

KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) is the creator of the HUBO humanoid robot series and forms part of the research lineage behind Rainbow Robotics, a leading South Korean humanoid company.

KAIST's humanoid robotics research has produced the HUBO series of full-size bipedal robots, which gained worldwide recognition when HUBO won the DARPA Robotics Challenge in 2015 — a landmark event that demonstrated the potential of humanoid robots in disaster-response scenarios. The lab's expertise in bipedal walking, whole-body manipulation, and robust mechanical design has made KAIST a central institution in South Korea's competitive robotics ecosystem. Rainbow Robotics, a commercial spinout from KAIST, has continued to develop bipedal and humanoid platforms based on this research foundation. KAIST remains an active contributor to humanoid locomotion, control, and robot system integration research.
