Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia
Creator of iCub, ergoCub and R1 — Europe's humanoid robotics powerhouse
Italy's Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) created the iCub, ergoCub and R1 humanoid robots and pioneered full-body robotic tactile skin, establishing itself as Europe's leading institute for humanoid robotics research.
IIT has built a family of humanoid platforms — from the child-sized iCub research robot to the industrial-oriented ergoCub and the service robot R1 — that have been distributed to research labs worldwide and helped define open benchmarks for humanoid cognition and whole-body manipulation. The institute's work on artificial tactile skin, distributed sensing arrays that cover a robot's entire body surface, remains among the most advanced in the world and is directly applicable to safe human-robot contact. IIT integrates mechanical engineering, neuroscience-inspired control, and machine learning in a way that makes its humanoids uniquely suited to studying human-like perception and dexterity. Its research output underpins both academic progress and the growing European humanoid industry.
